Penny has had art in one form or another in her life as long as she can remember. She began singing solos in church before she started school. Penny colored and painted at a table built especially for her by her grandfather (she still has that table today.)
Penny sang with choirs throughout junior high, high school and college performing numerous solos as well. She took singing lessons for 10 years and piano lessons for 6 years.
She started taking art classes in high school but decided to participate in music instead. Twice she played the part of Mother Abbess in the “The Sound of Music”; singing the famous song “Climb Every Mountain”. During college she sang in the choir for a Christmas operetta, and participated in the Idaho State University choir chosen to attend a music festival and tour Europe. She earned a minor in music while completing both a Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Speech-Language Pathology.
After Penny married, her husband started a community choir that she sang with, performing numerous solos. She also participated on the board of directors of the Blackfoot Community Players. Penny acted, directed music, and worked back stage for many productions. She also directed four plays, including “The Miracle Worker” and Twelve Angry Men”. After college she took several art classes in Idaho from Al Romero, an accomplished artist in oil painting. She also worked with different needle crafts; hardanger embroidery being her favorite.
Since moving to Ocean Shores, Penny has taken nearly 10 years of classes from Roy Lowry using watercolor and pastels. In addition, Penny has worked with Anne Kuhlberg using colored pencils, Mary Gibbs using watercolor, and several other local artists.
She has consistently used music, theater, and art throughout her 40 year career as a Speech-Language Pathologist to help children and adults improve their communication skills. She is now enjoying being a part of the North Beach Artist Guild and displaying her artwork in the Gallery of Ocean Shores. All art forms are important to Penny’s life and well-being.
